‘Day in the Town’ expected to attract crowd to downtown area on Saturday

Brookneal’s “Day in the Town” will be held this Saturday in conjunction with the Brookneal Striped Bass Tournament, and organizers are planning for this year’s event to be one of the best ever.

Scheduled to get underway all day Saturday along Main Street, “Day in the Town” will offer something for everyone.

The Town of Brookneal will host the annual celebration beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing to 5 p.m., according to “Day in the Town” Chairman Champ Nowlin.

Food vendors, crafters, games, face painting, antique car show, free screenings and entertainment are some of the events planned for this Saturday’s big day in Brookneal.

Local organizations, businesses and individuals have signed up at the Brookneal Town Hall to participate in the “Day in the Town” by setting up displays and exhibits.

And anyone interested in participating in Day in the Town still have time to come by the town office at 215 Main Street to pick up a registration form or call the town office at 434-376-3124 for more information.

The cost of renting a space on Main Street during the Day in the Town event is $15 and payable at the Brookneal Town Office at the time of registration.

Chairman Nowlin along with Mayor Phyllis Campbell are encouraging participation in this year’s town get-together.

“We have been getting calls everyday from people who want to come,” Nowlin said.

He praised Town Clerk/Treasurer Bobbie Waller and Interim Town Manager and Public Works Director Mike Crews for their help in organizing this year’s event.

Musical entertainment will be provided with performances scheduled by the Midway Baptist Praise Team from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., The Patrick Family from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,

Entertainment on stage also will feature well known local singer Estelle Dawson at12:30 p.m. and Ronnie Hall and Friends at 1 p.m.

Also there will be a special appearance by Lamon recording artist Diane Colyer from NC.

She has recently been in Nashville promoting her latest CD, appearing in a new TV commercial and a video shoot about the streets of Nashville and The Grand Ole Opry.

Colyer performs at festivals,concerts and fairs and will be performing in Brookneal at 2 p.m.

To get the day going, the Staunton River Masonic Lodge #155 will host an ‘all you can eat’ pancakes, eggs and sausage breakfast on Saturday, May 5 from 7 - 10 a.m. with a $5 donation.

Chairman Nowlin said Brookneal Police Chief Ricky Cousins will have a booth set up selling funnel cakes, fried chicken and fish, while Mike Morris will have a booth selling delicious Melrose bison meat.

Patric Boggs’ Smokehouse BBQ stand will be selling pulled pork, whole Boston butts, full slabs of ribs, barbecue chicken and barbecue sandwiches throughout the day on Saturday from their location in the Town Square adjacent to the Brookneal Community Building.

On Saturday evening at 5 p.m., Smokehouse BBQ will serve the barbecue dinners at the riverfront with all proceeds going to Brookneal Dixie Youth Baseball.

Barbecue plates are $5 in advance by calling 376-1319 and $7 on the day of the event; whole Boston butts will cost $20; and a full rack of baby back ribs will cost $15.

BBQ - both plates and sandwiches - hot dogs, hamburgers, homemade french fries, whole Boston butts, whole rack of ribs will be available during Day in the Town.

Brookneal Town Council member Tracy Meisenbach will have many of her horses on display and also will offer rides to the youngsters.
