GRETNA - Two Gretna High Hawks' football stars have signed to play on the college level.

Tyon Bennett, 17, and Bryant Vennable, 18, signed letters of commitment to Catawba College Wednesday at Gretna High School.

The two received full scholarships and plan to room together at the college where Gretna has held its preseason camp for several years.

"I'm happy for both of them," said head football coach Chris Thurman. "They deserve it. They started as freshmen and played well for four years. I'm happy to see them both go to school."

Gretna Principal Deborah Powell is also glad the pair has a successful future ahead.

"We're always excited here at Gretna High School to have our athletes sign," she said.

"We think it's a blessing that we're able to work with the parents and make this happen for their future."

Vennable, a cornerback, was named First-Team All-State and Bennett, a running back, was named honorable mention All-State.

Bennett was also the Dogwood District Player of the Year for the last two seasons.

The two were also part of last season's undefeated state championship team.

Both players plan to train hard in the off-season, working to become starters when the regular season kicks off.

"I'm excited," Vennable said. "I can't wait."

Bennett is also looking forward to the college life.

"It's a Gretna atmosphere," he said of Salisbury, N.C., where Catawba is located. "It has small classes, good teachers and a good football program."
