Farmer returns to the racetrack
By MARK THOMAS/Altavista Journal Editor Wednesday, July 16, 2008 10:25 AM EDT
It's been almost three years since Ben Farmer climbed into a car to race.
Farmer, a 25-year-old Hurt resident, will end that streak Aug. 9 at the Motor Mile Speedway in Radford. Farmer will put on his helmet and drive in a NASCAR Limited Sportsman race.
He's seen a lot of success at the track.
In 2005, Farmer, an Altavista native, had eight top 5 finishes and 22 top 10 finishes at the Motor Mile Speedway. He was named the track's rookie of the year.
Next month's race will be Farmer's first since October 2005.
Farmer is glad to be getting back in the car. He missed it.
"I talked about it to my wife (Apryl) all the time about wanting to get back in it. I'm really excited and looking forward to getting back into it," Farmer said last week.
He got out of racing because of what many drivers face - he didn't have the sponsorship to continue.
However, he didn't leave the sport altogether. For the past two race seasons, Farmer has been a team member on Peyton Sellers' car in the Camping World East Series. Last weekend, he was in Connecticut racing.
Sellers Racing Inc. of Danville will prepare Farmer's car and provide the pit crew for the Aug. 9 race. The group won the 2005 Dodge Weekly Racing Series National Championship.
Farmer has several sponsors for his run at Radford. Piedmont Kitchen & Bath of Pelham, N.C., Dawson Ford Garbee and Co. Realtors of Lynchburg, Sellers Brothers Construction of Danville and Mark's Paint and Body Shop of Rustburg will be on the car.
"If it wasn't for these great sponsors, I would not be able to race on my own. So I am very thankful for their commitment," Farmer said.
Farmer, who works for Moore's Electric & Mechanical Construction in the design/build department, plans to race at Radford about three times this season.
Farmer said he has more room on the car for sponsorships. For information, call 434-309-2586.
