Project brings banners to town's Main Street

A joint project of Altavista On Track and the town will help notify drivers on Main Street about happenings in the community.

Two steel poles, each standing 30 feet tall and weighing 1,150 pounds, were recently erected near where Pittsylvania Avenue intersects with Main Street. Civic organizations, the town and other groups will be able to hang banners from the poles to provide information about events. They're ready for use now.

Jo Kelley, executive director of AOT, said people who live in Altavista and those passing through will be able to see what's going on in town.

Kelley said groups who want to display a banner must apply at town hall.

There is a fee of $30 that covers the town's handling of the banner.

"The town will blow away and these poles will still be in place," Dan Witt, assistant to the town manager, said.

AOT paid for the poles and the town donated the labor.

Witt said the project, including materials, drilling the holes and the concrete, came to $11,000.
