Lynch Station teen earns Eagle Scout recognition

He planned the project, lined up the dozen or more volunteers to help, prepared the budget, got the materials, participated in the construction and coordinated the effort.

The 8-by-8, wood, shingle roof radio building for the Hurt Police Department was Mitch Hailey's Eagle Scout project.

The Hurt Volunteer Fire Department also uses the building.

The 15-year-old Hailey, a member of Boy Scout Troop 278, received the rank about a month ago.

Hailey, of Lynch Station, said it took about two months from planning the project to finishing the building, which is located at the water tower in Hurt.

The building has a concrete floor and electricity.

"He did a super nice job," said Ed Hodges, Hurt's public works director.

Hailey said his granddad, Paul Shelton, was a big help on the project as was Assistant Scoutmaster Phillip Popek and Scoutmaster Sam Hissam.

He said his mom, Joy Hailey, has kept him going in scouts.

Hailey has been in scouting since age 6.

He said he's learned survivor and camping skills, what to do if he's lost and to be more of a gentleman.

He next wants to work with some of the younger members.

Hailey is a sophomore at Faith Christian Academy in Hurt, where he's in the Beta Club and plays baseball, basketball and soccer.

He plans to attend Liberty University. Engineering is a career possibility.

This summer, he's working at Altavista Appliance.

Hailey is the grandson of Paul and Janice Shelton and Richard and Thelma Barrett.
