New art gallery opens in Lynchburg

Thursday, August 14, 2008 10:37 AM EDT

Beth Colville smiles when she talks about Art-n-Soul A Fine Art Gallery.

"It's kind of been a dream," Colville said about the gallery she and husband Tom own and recently opened in Lynchburg.

"I really feel positive about this. I think it's going to be a great thing for the area."

Located at 544 Oakley Avenue, the gallery's grand opening was July 19.

Eleven local artists - Solly Blank, Cindy Lacy, David Eakin, John Murphy Jr., Andrea Ferguson, Karen Lisle, Sandra Ploch, Bernice Johnson, Myrna Nein, Ginny Van Gurp and Colville - have artwork on display through Aug. 30. The art includes watercolors, oils, acrylics, pastels, charcoals and photography.

Ferguson and Johnson are from Altavista.

Colville, who lives in Evington, also has works by internationally known artists Christa Kieffer, Kathryn Fincher, Rod Chase and Bruce Greene on exhibit. In addition, she has Queena Stovall prints and note cards, along with other memo pads and cards.

All total, Colville has 262 pieces in the gallery.

"I think we have a nice variety, a nice selection for people to choose from. I hope it's warm and friendly looking," said Colville, who is president of the Seven Hills Art Club.

All of the artwork is for sale.

Besides what hanging on the walls, Colville has a clothesline art section. Here, work that is ready for matting and framing is pinned to a line in the front windows.

She said the story goes that 100 years ago, artists would hang finished work on a clothesline, and if anyone wanted it, they took the art and left payment pinned to the line.

"It's such a neat story. I wanted to carry the clothesline art on somehow in the shop."

Colville wants Art-n-Soul to also be a place for people to visit and just sit, enjoy the art and decipher what the artist had in mind when painting. She said students can come and interview artists.

The featured artists will change, and Colville said there would be periodic receptions for artists.

The gallery is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There is no admission charge.
