County asks governor to declare drought disaster

The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution last week asking Gov. Tim Kaine to declare the county a drought disaster.

A drought disaster declaration from the governor would allow county farmers to qualify for federal relief.

In a letter to supervisors, the county's Agricultural Development Board noted that below-average rainfall and scorching heat have hurt crops and livestock.

"Both crops and livestock have suffered under these circumstances. However, the ones suffering the most are our farmers," said Fred Wydner III, the county's agricultural development director.

Wydner noted that lost farm revenue from the drought cannot be replaced.

"The additional burdens created by historically high prices for fertilizer and fuel ultimately leave most of our agriculturalists realizing the possibility of net losses for the year," he said.
