Sheriff's office looks into thefts

The Campbell County Sheriff's Department is looking into several thefts in the Altavista area over the Labor Day holiday.

On Aug. 28, two attempted thefts were reported within walking distance of each other in the Holly Hills subdivision.

An attempted auto theft was reported at 369 Windsung Drive by Craig Blackstock. According to the report, someone tried to pry open the door, breaking out a window in the victim's Chevrolet Cobalt, setting the car alarm off. Neighbors heard the alarm and looked around, but did not see anything.

The second incident was reported by Bryant Haskins at 519 Holly Hills Drive. According to police reports, someone entered his truck and took a company checkbook and set of keys. The checkbook was found near the truck.

Maj. Steve Hutcherson with the Campbell County Sheriff's Department asked anyone in the neighborhood to be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles and mindful about locking their vehicles.

"Be vigilant about not leaving valuable items in your vehicles and keep them locked," said Hutcherson. "If you see or hear anything at night or see a vehicle where it does not belong, let us know and call in the tags so that we can check it out."

Hutcherson also said the department would be stepping up patrol in the area and will have deputies on foot.

If you have any information on these incidents, please contact the Campbell County Sheriff's Office at 434-332-9580 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-798-5900.
