The Campbell County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday night, Sept. 2, holding two public hearings for the erection of two cellular towers.
Supervisors approved both projects in unanimous 7-0 votes.
The request was presented by Integrated Wireless Development LLC on behalf of AT&T Wireless for a special use permit to construct two 199-foot towers in two different locations in the county.
The first tower would be located on property owned by Frank and Loretta Merryman on Colonial Road in Rustburg, near the intersection with Wisecarver Road.
The second, which will be the same height and for the same purpose, is set to be constructed on the property of Richard J. Jones, located on Rocky Road, about a mile north of the intersection with Campbell Highway.
The Campbell County Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval at its July 28 meeting.
The towers will be 199-foot monopoles bolted into a 30-foot concrete slab. They will be a matte grayish color to reduce reflection.
The towers are designed to collapse straight down to avoid damage to any nearby property.
Both towers will hold a minimum of three carriers and their antennas. Both sites will be covered with woods to conceal the features of the towers. Installation should take about a month.
A handful of people spoke in opposition and in favor of the two towers.
"We know that we need coverage here," said Matt Collins of Integrated Wireless, who presented the information Tuesday night. "We know that calls are being dropped as people travel along these areas."
