Hurt man convicted of domestic assault
By RUSSELL CARTER/Star-Tribune Staff Writer

James Raymond Safewright, 47, of Hurt was found guilty of third offense domestic assault in Pittsylvania County Circuit Court on Thursday.

Safewright was convicted for a May 3 incident in which he hit his live-in girlfriend in the nose during an argument while in a vehicle in Chatham.

Joyce Healy said Safewright struck her in the face and made her nose bleed after she smacked his hand for turning off her radio.

Safewright said he hit her only after she bit him on the arm, trying to make Healy unclench her teeth.

Defense attorney William C. Meyer II, claimed Safewright was acting in self-defense.

Although Healy did agree she bit Safewright, she said it was after he hit her.

Final sentencing will be on at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 4.
