Walter Keyes honored at meeting

Wednesday, October 8, 2008 9:31 AM EDT

Pittsylvania County Retired Teachers Association recently honored Walter Keyes for his dedication to the teaching profession.

The organization celebrated "Walter Keyes Day" and gave Keyes many well deserved accolades as one who lifted high the standards of the professional educator.

Keyes came to Pittsylvania County in 1949 and has spent the last 58 years demonstrating the characteristics of the ideal educator.

He began his career as a teacher at Northside High School and later became assistant principal at Chatham High School.

He retired in 1988 as principal of Dan River High School.

As a member of the Pittsylvania County Retired Teachers Association, Keyes served the organization well as treasurer for many years.

His outstanding dedication to this group led to the day of special honor.

Priscilla Merricks, president, read a proclamation honoring Keyes and told of the many services that he had rendered to education.

Keyes is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Beta Sigma, and the Principals' Association.

He is a lifetime member of the NAACP, a former member of the national, state, and local education associations, and has served as deacon at Corinth Christian Church.

Keyes is married to Marian S. Keyes, and they live in Chatham. They have one son who lives in Atlanta and two granddaughters.
