Curves helps area women promote good health, cancer awareness

Friday, October 10, 2008 8:56 AM EDT

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Curves in Altavista wants to make sure every woman in the community knows the benefits of early detection.

Over the past several years, Curves has participated in various fundraising and charitable events helping to raise millions for the fight against breast cancer.

Continuing those efforts, the Altavista location is offering the Liv Aid breast self-exam kit during October to help women in the community become more comfortable performing monthly exams at home.

"This is our breast cancer awareness, and we have chosen to offer this to any lady who comes in for a tour and assessment to learn about Curves," said Tina Walden, trainer at the Altavista Curves.

"We want to stress that this tool does not replace yearly checkups and mammograms," said Walden. "But it can be used to check in between those."

The kit is an outreach program to promote overall good health in women.

"We want to tell them about Curves, learn what their goals are and what we can do to help them achieve those goals," added Walden.

In the effort to reach out to the community and promote good health, Curves representatives will also visit local businesses throughout the month to demonstrate how the product works.

"We hope to do this the week leading up to our 'Girls Night In' event," said Walden. That event will be held Oct. 24 from 6-8:30 p.m. The community is invited.

"We are focusing on those women who are currently going through breast cancer and those who are survivors," said Walden.

Representatives from Tastefully Simple and Avon, along with Dr. Nicole Scanlon-Rowlett, will be on hand for the event.

"We will have someone to go over proper skin care and have a facial demo, and Dr. Scanlon-Rowlett will come in to teach the proper way to perform a self-breast exam," said Walden.

Information from the American Cancer Society will also be available.

The Liv Aid kits will also be for sale at Curves for $9.95 plus tax. The regular market price is $24.95.

Curves has already distributed almost 10 of the kits in the last week.

"We chose to distribute the kits because Curves is genuinely concerned about women's health issues," said Walden. "We see the link between obesity and breast cancer. It's all about women's health and making them healthier all the way around and throughout the community."

Curves representatives will also be at the Moore's health fair Nov. 8.
