Area residents prepare to vote on Tuesday

The town of Brookneal, and counties all in Virginia are preparing to go out and cast their votes Tuesday, Nov 4 to get their voice heard in the election for the next president of the United States.

The Brookneal precinct, number 701, goes up north to Red Bottoms Road, down to Three Creeks Road and around Railview and Whipping Creek Road. Residents will cast their votes at Brookneal Elementary between the designated times of 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Any voter who is in line to vote at 7 p.m. will be able to vote.

The Commonwealth of Virginia sample ballot for the Campbell County general election consisted of candidates for President, Vice-President, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives for Fifth District, local officers of Brookneal and Altavista, Special election for Timberlake District School Board member

All ballots are now electronic, and paper ballots will not be used unless there is an emergency or the electronic system malfunctions, according to Karen Danos, General Register with Campbell County.

The Gladys Precinct, 702, will vote at Gladys Elementary and Morris Church precinct, 703, pertaining to the area north toward the county line of Appomattox will vote at Union Hill Baptist Church.

Since the 2004 Presidential Election, three of the county's polling locations were changed in 2006. All voters affected by the change were sent new voter registration cards. The following changes were made:

The Bedford Springs Precinct, 202, currently voted at the Lakewood Baptist Church. Citizens will now locate to #1727 Moose Lodge, 934 Waterlick Rd to cast their votes. The Spring Hill Precinct, 501, previously voted at Lyn-Dan Heights Ruritan Club; citizens will now locate to Hyland Heights Baptist Church, 100 English Tavern Rd. to cast their votes. The Concord Precinct, 603, previously voted at Concord Elementary School. Citizens will now cast their votes at Calvary Baptist Church, 9388 Village Hwy.

The presidential candidates are listed below in the order they will appear on the ballot.

Presidential Candidates: Democratic Party- Barack Obama, President andJoe Biden, Vice President; Republican Party- John McCain, President and Sarah Palin, Vice President; Independent Green Party- Chuck Baldwin, President and Darrell L. Castle, Vice President; Libertarian Party- Bob Barr, President and Wayne A. Root, Vice President; Green Party- Cynthia McKinney, President and Rosa Clemente, Vice President; Independent- Ralph Nader, President and Matt Gonzalez, Vice President

The United States Senate Candidates include: Democratic Party - Mark R. Warner, Republican Party - James S. "Jim" Gilmore III, Independent - Glenda Gail Parker and Libertarian - William B. Redpath.

Campbell County candidates include: Timberlake school board, Susan R. Hogg and Jay Fred Watson, Altavista: Mayor: J.R. Rudy Burgess, Town Council: voters can vote up to three candidates: Ronald P. Coleman, Beverley E. Dalton, James H. Higginbotham, II, Timothy J. Thacker. Brookneal

Each ballot has a choice of a write-in. Call 2 possible write-ins.

There are 2349 precincts in the Commonwealth of Virginia, not including central absentee precincts.

For some information for voting in Virginia as a whole, there were 4,549,864 registered voters in Virginia as of the printing of the poll books on October 16, 2007. In 2006, there were 4,554,683 registered voters in Virginia.

As of October 14, 2008 the net registration gain of voters is: registrations as of Jan. 1, 20008- 4,585,838; registrations as of Oct. 13, 3008- 5,021,993 with a net gain since of 436,155. About 168,000 people under the age of 25 have registered to vote since January 2008, with about 52 percent of those being women. Also, 86,960 individuals between the ages of 25 and 34 have registered since January 1, 2008 with about 53 percent of that group being women. In every age group, more women have registered than men.

The Virginia State Board of Elections certifies the results of the presidential election. Immediately following its certification by the State Board of Elections, the agency changes the classification of the election results on its web site from Unofficial to Official and makes available to the public, election results summaries and locality/precinct details.

The State Board of Elections will meet to certify the results of the election on Monday, Nov. 24, 2008. The members of the Virginia State Board of Elections are, Chairman, Jean Cunningham, Vice-Chair, Harold Pyon and Secretary, Nancy Rodrigues.

In Virginia, there are no automatic recounts; only the presumptive losing candidate can ask for a recount; and only in cases where the difference between the apparent winning and losing candidate is not more than 1 percent of the total votes cast for the two candidates. The petition for a recount of a presidential election shall be filed no later than 5 p.m. on the second calendar day after the State Board certifies the result of the election.
