Chatham alumni basketball game planned Nov. 28

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 11:33 AM EST

Chatham High School's Class of 1990 will sponsor a Chatham High School alumni basketball game Friday, Nov. 28, to benefit the Herman C. Kelly Memorial Scholarship.

The game will begin at 6 p.m. at the school gym. Tickets are $5. There also will be a 50-50 raffle.

Kelly, who died in 2007, was a 1990 Chatham High graduate, president of the Student Government Association and a member of the varsity basketball team.

"Herman was a model student as well as classmate, and was cherished by all. He embraced everyone and was known to make everyone feel included," said class spokesman Trista Pope Fayton.

Fayton is a member of the Herman C. Kelly Memorial Scholarship board along with Regina Hairston Kellogg, Greg Haymore and Cynthia Newby Mills.

The Herman C. Kelly Memorial Scholarship will assist a Chatham High School senior with educational expenses.

After graduating from Chatham High, Kelly pursued a passion for helping people as a licensed funeral director and embalmer.

A graduate of John Tyler Community College and Virginia State University, he began

at Miller Funeral Home in Gretna and later relocated to Petersburg.

For player information, call Charles Hodnett at 250-0541.
