"Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory of His name; worship the Lord in Holy splendor. The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in His temple all say, ‘Glory!' The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as King forever. May the Lord give strength to His people! May the Lord bless His people with peace!" (Psalm 29)
White's United Methodist Church in Rustburg will host a celebration of its 200th anniversary Sunday, Jan.15.
NEW PROSPECT BAPTIST
"Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord; abide in Him always, and feed on His word. Make friends of God's children, help those who are weak, forgetting in nothing, His blessing to seek. Take time to be holy, the world rushes on; spend much time in secret, with Jesus alone. By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be; thy friends in thy conduct, His likeness shall see. Take time to be holy, let Him be thy guide, and run not before Him, whatever betide. In joy or in sorrow, still follow the Lord, and looking to Jesus, still trust in His word. Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul, each thought and each motive, beneath His control. Thus led by His spirit, to fountains of love, thou soon shalt be fitted for service above." The above words to "Take Time To Be Holy" were written by William D. Longstaff in 1882, and the words were taken from 1 Peter 1:16. This song is found in The United Methodist Hymnal, Pew Edition, page 395.
The new year has come. The year 2012 is full of new possibilities and beginnings. This is the attitude many share as the new year arrives. We have expectations, hopes and dreams for the new season in our lives.
CHANGE ME MINISTRIES AND FELLOWSHIP
The start of a new year is always a time to take inventory and make resolutions to change one or more aspects of our life.

A story was shared with me about a woman who was out Christmas shopping with her two young children. After many hours of looking at row after row of toys and everything else imaginable, and after hours of hearing both her children asking for everything they saw on those many shelves, she finally made it to the elevator with them.
It is that time when you either are someone or else you know someone who has waited to do all of their Christmas shopping until the last minute. This is the season for shopping frenzy. The frenzy stretches from the planning stages and previews of Black Friday (or is that Black Thursday now?) on to the New Year's flurry of gift card spending and long lines of returns and exchanges.
Members of First Baptist Church on 12th Street in Altavista host a food pantry the third Saturday of each month in an effort to help the less fortunate in the community.
I remember as a child the thrill and excitement of waiting for Christmas morning to arrive. It was difficult to contain my eagerness of getting everyone up on that morning and making a mad dash to the Christmas tree to see what might be under it and around it.

This morning, I am opening the column with a question. Are you a talker, having something to say, but seldom giving others the opportunity to speak? Almost all people love to talk more than they love to listen. And even people who are shy or who don't talk too much usually do love to talk once they feel comfortable. That's why it is good when we meet someone who has the unique ability to inspire a person who never shares points of view in classrooms, Sunday school or any other venue to become a vital part of a group discussion or conversation.
The beginning notes for a sermon I once preached in another state simply said, "Wait in silence for one minute." So, I stepped up to the podium, arranged my notes and Bible, and then stood looking out at the people.

The Cook and Harris Memorial United Holy Church, located at 1397 Clover Road in Hurt, is preparing for its first church anniversary in its 84th year.
While reading Matthew 14:13-21, I was first struck by the the sign, wonder and marvelous deed of Jesus where he multiplied loaves and fishes so all could eat. Or if one follows the theology of Bultmann, one discovers that the miracle (if you will) was that Jesus changed their hearts so to enable the people to share with one another. For me, niether one diminshes the power of Jesus of Nazareth who is the Christ.
Do you enjoy country music? Besides the Hillcats' games on our local station, I enjoy tuning in to listen to what is new, and also, country oldies. I think we all get a kick out of "All My Exes Are in Texas." My favorite country oldie, however, is the one by Garth Brooks, called "Friends in Low Places."
Have you ever read a poem or story that expressed what you were feeling at that moment?

I loved the words of Paul that we are called to believe in "One Lord, one faith, one baptism and one God who is Father (and Mother) of us all."
The words goodness, kindness, peace, joy, love, gentleness, self-control, faithfulness and patience are on the interior walls of the Elim Assembly of God sanctuary/fellowship hall.
Veterans Day, an annual United States holiday honoring military veterans, a federal holiday, will be observed on Friday, when we will honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country and bravery.

I love to cook. I enjoy reading cookbooks, deciding recipes I would like to serve and who I would like to serve them to. I love mixing flour, sugar, yeast and salt and baking fresh bread in the oven. And most of all, I enjoy the smiles I see when I serve the food to the friends and family I love.
The joy of having families and friends is that you have people you love around you. You have people who remind you that you are loved and that people care about you.
Is it really true that we are sometimes harder on ourselves than others are toward us? If this is the case, why do we feel this way? Well, the one thing that we all can agree on is that we all at some point in life make mistakes and experience failure.

This month, we have been talking about preparing our spiritual lives for different seasons of our lives. One way we can prepare is through the act of love. We all know what love is. It is something we have for our spouse, our children, our parents and friends. We understand that love is an intense emotion that can run the spectrum of both joy to sorrow. Love is joyful and hopeful when we fall in love, when children are born, when good things are happening in our relationships.
Pastor Eduardo "Lalo" Paulin watched as Christian, a 9-year-old boy, walked into a Mexican church to receive a Christmas gift.
Welcome to fall! Fall has always been my favorite season because of the beautiful colors, the crisp air and crunchy leaves as I walk my dog. I also enjoy curling up with a cup of apple cider and a good book.
One day as my granddaughter and I were in a discussion about school, she asked me a question that allowed me to focus our conversation to greater teachable moments. She asked, "Grandma, who was your most favorite teacher?" Well, after pausing awhile, I answered, "Mrs. Berryman." She proceeded to ask me why? That was when our conversation really got interesting!

On Thursday, I did some driving. I loaded up the car at 7 a.m. and headed toward Jacksonville, Ala. Along the way, I made the usual stops that accompany my traveling south on Interstate 85. I stopped in Salisbury, Spartanburg, Anderson and Atlanta. I even stopped in Jacksonville, Ala., my hometown, because I always call ahead to see if the family needs anything before making my final stop at their home.
