With its hamburgers, chili and Frosty desserts, Wendy’s is coming to Altavista.

Assistant Town Manager Dan Witt has issued a zoning permit for the fast-food restaurant to locate beside Applebee’s on Clarion Road at the Walmart shopping center.

Witt, who issued the permit in the last few days, said the restaurant wants to be in operation by the end of summer.

Bryan Lewis, project manager at LE&D Professionals in Danville, said construction is hoped to start in May, with the restaurant being open in August. The building contractor will have 90 days to construct the building, he said.

Witt said the restaurant is a by-right use in a commercial zone. Besides Applebee’s and Walmart, the shopping center has a Goodwill store, Italian restaurant and several other businesses.

In his review, Witt looked at setback requirements, parking, vehicle stacking for a drive-through lane, and lighting and landscaping for the parking lot. He said everything met or exceeded requirements.

Witt said Campbell County is now looking at the site plan, a process that should take a week or so.

Plans call for a 3,656-square-foot building, with some over 1,300 square feet for the dining area, which would seat 88.

Witt said he received the plans April 3, although he had been talking to Lewis about a month.

The restaurant would be owned by Catie Food Systems of Danville. A call seeking information about the restaurant wasn’t returned.

According to its website, Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy’s in 1969 in Columbus, Ohio. Today, the Ohio-based company has some 6,500 franchise and company restaurants in the United States, 27 countries and American territories.
