If you're looking for the latest news and information, you can find it - and more - on the Altavista Journal's community website, www.altavistajournal.com.
The newspaper's website recently was redesigned to feature an updated look, easier navigation, interactive calendar, more community links and expanded opportunities for advertising.
The site offers up-to-date news, sports, obituaries, an online poll and letters to the editor, along with advertising, classified ads, public notices and the latest weather.
In addition, the new site features a slide show with photos and news, along with a multimedia section for video.
The website is updated daily.
Readers can get information about Altavista, Campbell County, local schools, Altavista Area Chamber of Commerce, Altavista On Track, Avoca, Staunton River Memorial Library, emergency services and other organizations just by clicking on community links.
A new pull-down menu takes readers straight to other important information.
"The Altavista Journal wants to be the community portal for information," said Editor Mark Thomas.
The new website also features an interactive community calendar. Readers are invited to submit events online for listing on the website and in the newspaper.
Other online features include forms for submitting weddings, engagements, anniversaries, birth announcements, letters to the editor, obituaries and news.
Readers can purchase subscriptions through the website, change their address, start or stop the newspaper for vacation and report delivery issues. They can also meet the Journal staff and quickly be able to see other Womack Publishing newspapers in Brookneal, Chatham and Appomattox.
In addition, the website serves as a gateway for the Altavista Journal electronic "e-edition." An exact replica of the newspaper, the e-edition is available free to print subscribers.
Another user-friendly feature is searchable classified ads. Readers can browse classifieds from a combination of newspapers for real estate and housing; rental property; items for sale, including cars, trucks and farm equipment; business services; help wanted employment listings; and legal notices.
Readers can place classified ads online and get information about web and newspaper advertising. All of the retail display ads published in the newspaper are available online.
One of the website's most valuable features is its archives. Every story posted to the web is stored in an electronic database that can be searched by key words or dates.
Readers can also purchase photos through the website.
"The Journal staff encourages the community to look at the new website each day to find out what's happening in the area, to submit information and to check out who's advertising," Thomas said.
