The Staunton River Family Physicians building is a total loss after a fire Saturday afternoon, according to Hurt Volunteer Fire Department Chief Brian Dudley.

Dudley said the call came in at 1:20 p.m. that the building was on fire. He said he could not yet confirm that someone was inside the building when the fire started.

The fire spread quickly and was in the attic when he arrived, Dudley said.

He sent four firefighters into the building for 15-20 minutes, but they were unable to stop the spread of the fire. He pulled them out when one part of the roof started to sag, he said.

The building did not have sprinklers.

Dudley said some firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion, but no one else was hurt in the fire.

No cause has yet been determined.

In addition to the Hurt fire department, Altavista Fire Company and Gretna Volunteer Fire Department, as well as Altavista EMS, responded.

See Wednesday’s Journal for more information about the fire.
