Local hero comes home
Members of the community salute the hearse carrying Marine Staff Sgt. Gregory T. Copes as it makes its way into Altavista on Friday afternoon. Area residents lined both sides of Main Street to show respect for Copes and support for his family. Copes, who was from Lynch Station, was killed in Afghanistan on Aug 17. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the Altavista Combined School gym. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service in Altavista.
