The Rev. Russell Thornton Hunt, age 87, of 219 Leftwich St., Gretna, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011, at the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke.

Born Oct. 9, 1924, in Halifax County, he was a son of the late Memory Ryland Hunt and Effie Arthur Hunt.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Roy Hunt and Clarence Hunt.

He was a Baptist minister serving three fields, Chase City, Walton's Mountain and Farmville. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gretna and the Woodmen of the World. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry and people.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rubye Crews Hunt of the residence; three brothers, Carroll Hunt of Brookneal, Irvin Hunt of Nathalie and Winfree Hunt of Nathalie; and one sister, Nannie Bell Henderson of Hurt.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at First Baptist Church of Gretna by the Revs. Jonathan Hilliard and Rick Cardwell. Military service was provided by the Virginia National Guard Honor Guard.

A private entombment will be held at Altavista Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Gretna, P.O. Box 339, Gretna, Va. 24557.
