•The cold weather caused problems for many over the Christmas holidays. Temperatures ranged from 32 degrees to one degree on Christmas Eve, and got down as low as four degrees on Christmas Day. Area plumbers and servicemen were kept busy with little time for Christmas celebrations.

•On Jan. 2 at 12:57 p.m., Altavista's first baby of the new year was born to Mr. and Mrs. Tae Kim of Main Street. Diana, the Kim's newly arrived baby girl, weighed eight pounds. Her parents were born in Korea, but were U.S. citizens.

•Altavista merchants were enthusiastic about Christmas sales. The retailers received publicity in the Lynchburg News and on Channel 7, Roanoke, WBDJ.

•The Lane Company employees in Altavista, Rocky Mount and Smyrna, Tenn., received bonus payments totaling $1.6 million. Chairman B.B. Lane also announced the addition of Memorial Day as a paid holiday.

•Hurt Town Council made definite plans for signing up customers for the town water system with a deadline of March 31.

•Lyndon M. Milliner of Hurt, son of Joyce Milliner, had been selected by the students at Altavista High School as the DAR Good Citizen.

•The unveiling of the portrait of W.H. (William Hutchins) Overbey took place in a special session of Campbell County Circuit Court. The portrait would take its place among other portraits of distinguished judges. Judge Overbey, described as a "Virginia gentleman," was the first person to be so honored during his lifetime.

•Spencer Wormuth, a junior at Altavista High School, had been selected as an offensive guard on the first team of the AA All-State Football Team.

•A committee of merchants and businessmen and women from the Gretna area had scheduled a meeting for the purpose of continuing organizational plans for a Retail Merchants Association.

•B.L. Owens Manufacturing Co. Inc. had bought the former A.J. Schneierson & Son ladies sleepwear plant in Altavista. Owens stated that he would continue to make the same product and employ the same personnel who worked for Schneierson. The plant employed 125 workers and Owens hoped to expand the force by approximately 25 percent in the future.

•The Campbell County Board of Supervisors followed the usual yearly reorganization procedure by moving Calvin P. Carter, Altavista District, up from vice chairman to chairman.
