Hunter's safety course offered in New London A Virginia Hunter's Education Course will be held at the New London Ruritan Club building on Oct. 9-10. The course will be held from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m on Saturday and 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. on Sunday. You must attend both days in order to successfully pass the course. This includes all persons who are 12 to 15 years of age, and all persons 16 years or older who have never been issued a hunting license. All first time hunters are required to take this course regardless of age. Citation striper This striped bass catch is the first citation striper for Brian Warme of Vinton. The fish, that weighed 18 pounds, and was 40 1/2 inches long, was caught Sept. 24 while Warme was fishing with Rod Bender Striper Guide Service . Big Lick Triathlon The Outback Steakhouse Big Lick Triathlon was held Saturday at Smith Mountain Lake State Park. Several hundred competitors from several states came to the event. The race consists of a 1.5 kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike race and a 10-kilometer run. Proceeds from the triathlon are donated to the YMCA of Roanoke Valley.
