Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a surveyor discovered human remains in the Tightsqueeze area just south of Chatham on Friday.
According to Lt. Col. Ronnie Simpson, the county’s 911 center received a call about what appeared to be human remains around 1:30 p.m.
The remains were discovered in the 200 block of Samuel Harris Lane in the section that runs between Tightsqueeze Road and U.S. 29 near Chatham High School.
A surveyor found the remains in a wooded area off the road, Simpson said.
The remains have been sent to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for identification.
Simpson declined to say whether the remains were male or female or how long they appeared to have been in the woods.
“They had been there awhile,” the chief deputy said.
Investigators, who spent most of the afternoon at the scene, are checking missing persons reports from within the community.
