Pittsylvania County Circuit Court Judge Charles J. Strauss will retire in August after 14 years on the bench.

Strauss, 64, wants to give back to the community during his retirement.

"I just think at this point there are other things I would like to do," he said. "I would like to, in some way, give back to the community. There's a tremendous amount of work that needs to be done."

Appointed in 1998, Strauss is the second judge to announce plans to retire in the 22nd Judicial Circuit, which includes Danville and Pittsylvania and Franklin counties.

Danville Circuit Court Judge David A. Melesco retired in December, leaving the Virginia General Assembly judicial vacancies to fill in Danville and Chatham.

Del. Don Merricks, who represents Pittsylvania County in the 16th District, expects legislators to appoint new judges this spring.
