DANVILLE — The Piedmont Virginia Senior Amateur Golf tour recently held its third tournament of the season at Tuscarora Country Club in Danville.
After a frosty start, the scores heated up fast with 43 birdies being recorded by the 31 players in the field.
Harry Lea of Danville, making his first appearance on the tour, used a three-birdie performance to card a 2 over par 74 for first place in the championship flight.
Lea beat past tour winners Richard Suggs and John Franklin by two strokes. They both tied at 76.
Suggs, who last won at Spring Creek, used a near hole-in-one shot to also win a closest to the pin prize.
Terry Towler finished fourth with a 79.
The A flight continued to contest the championship players by placing six of the 12 golfers in the under-80 bracket.
Leading the way with four birdies on his card for a 74 was Phillip Clay of Evington. Clay picked up his second win in a row.
Chris Salmon of Danville took second place with a 76.
Raymond Newman, J.A. Devin, Keith Myers, and Kevin Kiser all recorded 78s.
The B flight was led by two Danville players on their home course.
Charlie Morris Powell picked up his first victory of the season with a 76.
Robert Agee, making his debut on the tour, took second place with an 80.
The top three places in the C Flight were once again taken by the same three past finishers; just the positions changed some.
David Davis of Martinsville picked up his second win of the season with an 82.
Two Huddleston players, Bart Truesdell, 86, and Tim Stirling, 91, took second and third.
Tuscarora Country Club, Emeritus of Danville, and Bojangle’s of Blairs sponsored closest-to-the-pin prizes.
Closest-to-the-pin winners were Richard Suggs, championship flight; Phillip Clay, A flight; Bill Knarr, B flight; and Bart Truesdell, C flight.
