A Richmond woman driving on the wrong side of U.S. 460 crashed head-on with another vehicle on Saturday evening in Pamplin, killing the driver of the other vehicle.
Paul E. Lynch, 23, of Chase City, died at the scene of the accident, which took place approximately one-tenth of a mile east of State Route 628.
The Richmond woman, 51-year-old Maria L. Souza, was transported to UVa Hospital in Charlottesville with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The horrific accident backed up traffic halfway to Appomattox in the U.S. 460 eastbound lane.
Souza was traveling in a 1997 Ford Taurus the wrong way, westbound, when she struck a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Lynch.
Both vehicles were totaled.
Souza was wearing a seatbelt, and the deceased victim was not wearing a seat belt, according to Virginia State Trooper S.T. Altizer.
Charges are pending further investigation into the cause of the crash.
Emergency crews from Appomattox and Pamplin worked the scene of the accident, including the Pamplin Volunteer Fire Department and EMS Unit, the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department and the Appomattox Rescue Squad.
The helicopter that transported Souza to UVa landed on U.S. 460.
