The Appomattox County Board of Supervisors is sick and tired with Richmond lawmakers for forcing local taxpayers to finance projects that were formerly paid for through state services.

That's why the Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution on Feb. 6 and requests that the Virginia General Assembly "to stop passing the buck."

The resolution was sent to Appomattox County from the Virginia Association of Counties (VaCo) Communications Committee.

The VaCo committee focused on devolution from the Commonwealth and its effects on secondary roads, aid, education, public safety and health-and-human resources.

In effect, VaCo and other rural localities are upset about forcing their local taxpayers to pay for things that should be paid for out of Richmond's account.

"I think we need to get the resolution to state that the unfunded mandates have gotta stop," said Jerry Small, chairman of the Board of Supervisors.

Supervisor Gary Tanner added, "I've been railing every month, twice a month, against these unfunded mandates."

Indeed, Tanner mentions his opposition to state unfunded mandates during every meeting of the Board of Supervisors.
