A fire completely destroyed an Appomattox County home on Saturday near the Promise Land community.
The doublewide home with a basement was located on Red House Road and belonged to Debora Hendricks.
Timmy Garrett, fire chief for the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department, said the cause of the fire is undetermined but not suspicious in nature.
The fire call came in at 4:27 p.m., and the Appomattox unit responded with 27 firefighters, two engine trucks, a tanker and its ladder truck.
The firemen were on the scene 15 minutes after the call and when they arrived, the left rear of the house was engulfed in flames.
The firefighters battled the fully-involved blaze for “45 minutes to an hour,” Garrett said.
The department stayed on the scene for approximately five hours.
Hendricks was home at the time of the fire but escaped uninjured.
The only thing saved from the home was an American flag that was posted on the front porch.
Appomattox firemen received assistance from fire departments in Red House and Concord, both of whom provided tankers.
In addition, the Appomattox Rescue Squad was on the scene.
