Tragedy struck Appomattox County on Sunday afternoon when an 18-year-old Pamplin woman died in a single-vehicle accident.
Melissa A. Smith of Pamplin was driving a 2006 Pontiac G6GT traveling on Route 638 (Wheelers Spring Road), when she ran off the right side of the road, according to press release from the Virginia State Police.
Then, Smith overcorrected and the vehicle went off the left side of the road, striking an embankment before the vehicle overturned.
At around 3:15 p.m., Trooper Morgan Croft responded to the scene of the accident, which was less than a mile west of Route 47, near Smith’s home.
Smith, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Smith was the only occupant of the vehicle, and alcohol was not factor in the wreck.
Croft is investigating the accident.
