Snow fell across the region last Wednesday, causing accidents and power outages.
Appomattox saw about two inches of snow, while some outer-lying areas saw up to four inches.
There were five weather related accidents in Appomattox, according to Sgt. Drew McCormick of the Virginia State Police.
Two of those accidents took place on Watt Abbitt Road, while one each took place on Pumping Station Road, U.S. 460 in Spout Spring and One on U.S. 460 two miles east of the bypass towards Evergreen.
The driver who was in a single vehicle accident on Pumping Station Road suffered minor injuries, said McCormick.
The other accidents, McCormick said, involved property damage.
“We were lucky. Everything was fairly minor. It could have been a lot worse,” said McCormick.
The Virginia State Police reported that there were 79 accidents for the Division III area, which includes Appomattox, Charlottesville, Waynesboro, Staunton, Lynchburg, South Boston and South Hill.
Between midnight Wednesday and 10 a.m. Thursday, state troopers responded to 367 traffic crashes and 237 disabled vehicles. Also, state police dispatchers fielded about 550 additional calls for assistance and other information. Most of the accidents involved vehicle damage. There were no reported deaths as a result of a weather-related accident.
The snow did prompt some area businesses to close.
Appomattox County Public Schools were closed along with some administrative offices, which closed early.
Wet snow and strong winds caused power outages across the region. There were 17 reported power outages in Appomattox, according to Central Virginia Electric Cooperative’s online records.
The snow did not stay for long. By the afternoon, the sun was out melting the new fallen snow.
